St. Joseph Medical Center has hired Dr. Glenn Amundson, M.D., a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon with 34 years of experience in treating adult spinal disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. Dr. Amundson will be accepting new patients on July 6 at Prime Orthopedics and Spine, located on the hospital campus in Kansas City.

Dr. Amundson has vast experience with minimally invasive spine techniques, Total Disc Replacement (TDR), and difficult revision spine procedures. He was named as one of Kansas City's Top Doctors by Ingram's, Kansas City's Business Magazine (2011) and has a long career of military service.

“Dr. Amundson has devoted his entire medical career to advancing care and surgery of the spine,” says Jodi Fincher, CEO. “We are privileged to offer his expertise to the St. Joseph community and are honored to welcome to our team a retired Captain of the Medical Corps with 25 years of service in the U.S. Navy.”

After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1975, Dr. Amundson attended the University of Iowa Medical College in Iowa City on a Navy Scholarship and received his M.D. in 1979. His General Surgery Internship was served at Naval Hospital San Diego, and he served in the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton as a Battalion Medical Officer before returning to Naval Hospital San Diego to perform his Orthopedic Surgery Residency. His Fellowship training was in Comprehensive Adult Spinal Reconstructive Surgery at the University of California San Diego, a combined Orthopedic and Neurosurgical program.

Dr. Amundson founded and directed the Adult Orthopedic Spine Service for the Navy at San Diego and later Portsmouth Naval Hospital before supervising the Adult Orthopedic Spine Service at the University of Kansas Medical Center, a residency teaching program.

An active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, and the Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons, Dr. Amundson is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and tested in the field of spinal surgery. He has been actively involved in researching advanced spinal surgery procedures and instrumentation throughout his orthopedic career, including FDA studies on open and laparoscopic lumbar spinal fusion. He has published dozens of journal articles, abstracts, and textbook chapters and has held academic appointments as assistant professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center, the Veterans Administration Hospital in Kansas City, and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md.
