General Safety Procedures
The following regulatory agencies provide guidelines on safety measures to protect associates, volunteers and patients:
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
- Center for Disease Control (CDC)
- The Joint Commission (TJC)
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
- State of Missouri
Material Safety Data Sheets
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) contains details of the hazards associated with a chemical or product, and gives information on its safe use. In the event you are exposed to a product that could cause potential harm, contact your immediate supervisor or report to Employee Health immediately.
General Spills
If you spill a general liquid such as water or soda, or see someone else spill something, please wipe it up with a paper towel. If you did not see the spill happen, do not wipe it up, but mark it by dropping a paper towel or napkin over it so others do not slip and fall. Please report the spill immediately by dialing “0” to reach the operator and giving the location of the spill.
Radiation Safety
Exposure to radiation from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) occurs only when the technologist pushes the exposure button. However, for your safety please remember:
- The magnet is always on…even after hours
- Items unsafe for the MRI include all metal items, IV poles, paper clips, watches, cell phones, ID badges, pace makers and internal defibrillators.
Oxygen Tank Storage
Any compressed gas cylinder such as oxygen should be stored upright and secured in a rack, even if it is empty. If a rack is not available, lay the empty cylinder on its side, do not prop it up, in a non-traffic area until a rack can be obtained to transport it to Respiratory Care.
