Handling Specimens

When transporting specimens, gloves should be worn and the specimen should be in a jar in a sealed Ziploc bag. The specimen should be placed in a cooler or container with appropriate labels. After gloves are removed, wash hands thoroughly.
Precaution Signs
Before entering patient rooms, check the door for special PRECAUTIONS notices. These are for your safety as well as our patients’ safety. These signs will be in pink, orange, green or yellow. Patients under Protective Precautions will have a blue and white sign posted on the door. Volunteers should not enter these rooms for any type of service (including visits, transport, mail or flower delivery). Deliveries should be left at the nurses’ station.
