A pre-delivery visit with a Birthing Center nurse at St. Joseph Medical Center can help you prepare for your delivery. We suggest you schedule this visit during your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy. At this time, our staff will tell you what to expect during your hospital stay and take you on a tour of the unit. During your visit, you can complete some of the necessary pre-admission forms. This will make the admitting process faster and easier when you arrive at the hospital.
You will also have the chance to create a birth plan for your delivery and ask any questions you have.
Call 816-943-4645 to schedule a visit or for more information.
Special Care for Special Babies
Every family hopes their baby will be born healthy, but some newborns require more than routine medical care. When that is the case, the Birthing Center at St. Joseph is prepared. The hospital works with specialists from Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) to provide expanded care for babies with health problems. We offer a Level II NICU where short-term ventilation is available as needed, and babies at 30 weeks of gestation and older are comfortably cared for.
Neonatal nurse practitioners, who are highly specialized nurses from CMH, are on site 24 hours a day to begin emergency assessment and support treatment for newborns who need special care at the Birthing Center. These nurse practitioners are under the specific direction of CMH neonatologists, and physicians who specialize in caring for sick or premature babies.
The St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation, with the support of local community agencies, offers a unique prenatal program called Healthy Beginnings to families at no charge. Healthy Beginnings helps mothers considered socially at risk for complications during pregnancy to stay healthy, increasing the likelihood of delivering a healthy baby.
To see if you qualify, call 816-943-4645 and enroll early in Healthy Beginnings to receive the program’s maximum benefit.
Self-Pay Maternity Program
The Self-Pay Maternity Program is a community service for mothers without obstetric insurance coverage. It offers predictable charges and significant cost savings.
When your mother gave birth to you, families often lived close by. There often was an experienced relative who helped the new parents learn how to care for their infant – someone who understood how special this time can be. But in today’s fast-paced world, we rarely have the comfort of such reassurance and wisdom when we need it most. That’s where the Birthing Center at St. Joseph comes in. Our Birthing Center offers you a pre-delivery program designed to meet your needs. We can’t take the place of your family, but we can help you prepare for your labor, delivery and hospital stay. Our goal is to be sure your obstetrics stay is a comfortable one so that you and your family can make the most of every moment with your new baby.
