Women's Health Institute/Breast Center/Certified Breast Patient Navigators
Certified Breast Patient Navigators
Just as a car’s GPS system helps you to navigate with ease to your destination, our certified breast patient navigators guide the newly diagnosed breast cancer patient through the complex health care system. During a one-on-one consultation, patients are given educational resources, assisted in developing their plan and supported during a very emotional and vulnerable time. Many patients see the breast patient navigator as their support or “go-to” person. Our certified breast patient navigator has extensive experience in oncology and patient education, and our multidisciplinary approach increases patient satisfaction, safety and quality of care. The breast patient navigator GUIDES patients through the diagnostic evaluation, educates and supports each patient empowering them to make informed treatment decisions, and remains a support system throughout their cancer treatment journey.

Janie Metsker, RN, CBPN-C
Janie began her nursing career at
St. Joseph Medical Center as a Labor and Delivery nurse. She began working in the Breast Center in 2009 and is a Certified Breast Patient Navigator. She is also a breast cancer survivor and understands the journey a woman experiences with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Her knowledge and experience enable her to provide support and education assisting patients in their understanding of their diagnosis and in developing a multi-disciplinary plan of care. She is passionate about helping patients become survivors through a healthy lifestyle, including nutrition and exercise. Janie developed the WELL program, an eight-week program for breast cancer survivors providing information related to nutrition, fitness and stress reduction. The program also benefits breast cancer survivors, including improving their psychological health by allowing them to take a more active role in their recovery and the healing process and interact with other survivors.
