A pre-delivery visit with a Birthing Center nurse at St. Joseph Medical
Center can help you prepare for your delivery. We suggest you schedule
this visit during your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy. At this time,
our staff will tell you what to expect during your hospital stay and take
you on a tour of the unit. During your visit, you can complete some of
the necessary pre-admission forms. This will make the admitting process
faster and easier when you arrive at the hospital.
You will also have the chance to create a birth plan for your delivery
and ask any questions you have.
Call 816-943-4645 to schedule a visit or for more information.
Special Care for Special Babies
Some newborns require more than routine medical care. When that is the
case, the Birthing Center at St. Joseph is prepared. The hospital works
with specialists from Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) to provide
expanded care for babies with health problems. We offer a Level II NICU
where short-term ventilation is available as needed, and care is provided
for babies at 30 weeks of gestation and older.
Neonatal nurse practitioners, who are highly specialized nurses from CMH,
are on site 24 hours a day to begin emergency assessment and support treatment
for newborns who need special care at the Birthing Center. These nurse
practitioners are under the specific direction of CMH neonatologists,
and physicians who specialize in caring for sick or premature babies.
Our Birthing Center offers a pre-delivery program designed to meet your
needs. Our goal is to be sure your obstetrics stay is comfortable.
